On the Cutting Room Floor – Discovering My True Self #1

Readers of The Wrong Calamity might relate to this paragraph. It didn’t make it to the final manuscript, but in various ways the truths of it found their way in.

“What’s a child to do with unpromising beginnings like these? We don’t get to choose our own parents. I wouldn’t have chosen mine, and, it turned out, they wouldn’t have chosen me, either. They expelled me from their lives before I did them, and I tried too long to get back in. This led to the usual inevitabilities—being committed to my own ineptitude, too drawn to someone who would reinforce my neediness, doubting my own instincts—but eventually things got sorted out.”
